What do you do when a power surge destroys your hard drive and you loose hundreds

external back-up and to store photos and music files. Moreover, I do not use my optical drive too much, so I want to replace it with another HDD/SSD so that I may put adobe documents and Ableton projects in it. Any recommendation from your side regarding which SSD/HDD is good for me so that I may use it to replace optical drive.
